Script: Ah Counter

Use the Ah Counter Report (Word) (PDF) template to record Ahs, Ums and other crutch words. Report at the end of the meeting.

Explain the Role (Start of meeting)

As Ah Counter, I listen for crutch words such as "ah" "um" "so" "you know" and "like." Our aim is to reduce our reliance on those words and achieve clear, eloquence speech. At the end of the meeting, I will report on my findings.

Report (End of meeting)

Today, Amy had 2 ums

Bob had 2 ahs and 3 ums

Cathy had 0, which is amazing considering she delivered a 7 min speech

Dillon had 3 likes and 2 you know

Ed had just 1 um

Magic of the Inventor Artist

Again, we feature the inventive magic of Darcy Whyte, a former member of our club, THE Inventor Artist. In these videos, he shows us how to create a walk-a-long glider, a paper glider that stays aloft with the air compression of a piece of cardboard that you control. It will fly for as long as you can walk, but we recommend occasional breaks for refreshments! Try it at your next Toastmasters meeting, walking around the boardroom table for at least two minutes.

This video he made at the Ottawa Arts Court and at the Canadian Aviation Museum.

In this one, Darcy demonstrates how to build what he calls the "Best" two paper planes: Peace Plane and Long Plane. This was at the Musem of Science and Technology, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Do you have information worth sharing? Consider creating an instructional video. Video and audio quality are less important than the quality of the information and your enthusiasm for the subject.

Sometimes they turn out like this! HA HA!

First Kiss - Be Our Guest!

During our training sessions, we shake hands, high-five, hug and we even high-ten, but one thing we almost never see is a first kiss, or a second kiss for that matter.

In this video by Tatia Pilieva, ten pairs of complete strangers kiss for the first time. Watch what happens to their words, their faces, their body movements.

What is very much like our training is the first time someone visits. They the door the same way: a shy smile and, "Is this Toastmasters?"

Then we share names.

Then we share an hour of our lives - strangers a moment ago.

We will certainly shake hands. We might hug.

Someone might give a speech or answer a Table Topic question in which they share personal vulnerabilities, an intimate moment, of sorts.

The shy smile turns into some familiarity, like a first kiss. We might never meet again, but we met once and our lives are altered in some way, even if unnoticed. The moment is profoundly beautiful. Thank you Tatia for sharing these moments.

We welcome your sharing of our moments. Be our guest.
